Reporting to Post Everlasting 2021 -2022

This year we lost two members of our Post, Keneth R McDonald and Romie Bassetto.

Romie Bassetto, 1968-1969. US  Army, 9th Infantry Division, Vietnam,  Spec 4 Assigned to Battalion Staff, Commander's Aid in the Mekong Delta. 2016 San Mateo County Veteran of the Year

      American Legion offices held:

      1981. Joined American Legion

2007-2013. Commander American Legion Post 105

2019-2021. Commander American Legion Post 105

2000-2007. 1st Vice Commander, 2nd Vice Commander, 3rd Vice Commander

Mr. Bassetto eventually served three years each as Redwood City Post 105's 1st Vice Commander, 2nd Vice Commander and 3rd Vice Commander. He culminated his ‘career’ at Post 105 with multiple terms as Post Commander from 2007-2012 and 2019-2021 until he relinquished his duties to his successor, current Commander George Smith.

As a longtime Redwood City resident, he was involved with a Redwood City Veterans Housing project. Following years of dedicated service to military families, Romie was honored by California State Senator Jerry Hill on October 27, 2016, as Veteran of the Year for California's 13th Senate District.  In 2015, Romie, and fellow Post 105 Officer & Vietnam veteran (Col.) Leo McArdle, co-chaired the Avenue of Flags subcommittee which hosted the traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, "The Wall That Heals" at Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno. In 2016, Romie organized Redwood City's Veterans Day festivities as well as a ceremony to observe the 75th anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day.

Through his years of dedicated efforts, Romie elevated the profile of Post 105 in the local community as a beacon for veterans and volunteers who want to assist veterans.

Reflecting about his life’s path, Romie sang praises of his high school alma mater. From 1961 through graduation in June 1965, Romie attended the all-boys Catholic high school, Junipero Serra (Serra) in San Mateo. "The best school in San Mateo County, then and now," he noted with enthusiasm. "I donate as much of my time as I can there. Hey, if you know something will really improve a kid's life, give them a good start in the world— and I'm telling you, that's what Serra is all about—if you can be involved, be involved!"

Romie certainly fulfilled the last quote above; he got involved. He went beyond the call of duty to serve his country. He continued to serve his community and our Post to his last breath.

Submitted by Peggy Toye & Michael Toschak. This tribute was based on an article by author Jean Bartlett, copyright 2022. Bartlett’s biography was sponsored by  Helen Marlene Broce. It can be found online at www.bartlettbiographies.com and in a binder at Pacifica American Legion Post 238, 555 Buel Avenue, Pacifica, CA.

      State of the POst 2022-2023

State of the American Legion Post 105.  American Legion Post 105 Family is growing with members becoming more involved across the Peninsula. Our family includes the Post, Auxiliary, Riders and Blue Star Moms, all working together to assist our Redwood City Veterans and Community.

Membership led by our 1st Vice Commander Thomas Day is about the same as last year, holding steady at around 200 members. We have added many new members from the Gulf War and the War on Terror. We have also had a few members report to Post Everlasting, including past Commander Romie Bassetto. Commander Bassetto was a huge influence on Post 105 for several decades and his leadership will be missed.

Due to the pandemic, we are still dealing with slow hall rentals. For the past several years our Post rentals have been managed by Adjutant John Robinson. He’s been the glue that has kept the post up and running through this pandemic. On behalf of Officers and members of Post 105, ‘Thank You John’.

A Building Development Committee led by Past Commander Romie Bassetto and now led by Members at Large, Al Rosenmiller and Stan Maupin, they continue to make progress with our builder making sure nothing slows this project. The project involves a new structure, including a new Post, meeting rooms, kitchen, bar and 68 below market housing for veterans. Groundbreaking for this project should be some time in 2024.

We are very close to bringing Bingo back to the Post, Bingo should be back sometime in June or July of 2022. Vanguard will be running the Bingo and renting our facility on Tuesday and Thursday nights.

The American Legion Auxiliary led by Carol Rael continues to do great work supporting veterans at the Post and Peninsula, holding several fundraisers, supporting the Menlo Park VA Hospital, packing packages for deployed veterans and packages for at risk veterans. Besides supporting Veterans, the Auxiliary sponsored four girls to Girls State.

Chapter 105 Riders led by Andrew Trapani continues to do amazing work throughout the year. This last year the Riders provided Final Honors for veterans reporting to Post Everlasting, including TAPS and a Firing Detail. As of last count the Riders did 150 final honors.

Our American Legion Post 105 has had a website for several years https://americanlegionpost105rwc.org and has kept the post up to date on the happenings of the Post, Family and other American Legion Posts by adding a BLOG to the site. As of now we have 50 subscribers to the BLOG. Thanks to Michael Toschak, our webmaster. Information pertaining to what’s happening at the Post and connections to all the Family’s websites, Facebook Pages and contact information for all our Officers can be found on our website.

We’re looking forward to a very prosperous 2022-2023 annual year filled with many events supporting our Veterans and Community, come on down and be part of it, it’ll make you feel good and bring joy to others. Hope to see you soon.  Until then, be safe.

      Conclussion

On behalf of the Public Relations Team and the Board of The American Legion Post 105 of Redwood City, CA, we wish to thank you for participation in our Post and Community.  You are truly an amazing group of citizens! The previous pages will be save digitally for posterity along with a binder at the Post.  A 100 years from now they will say "Who was here?", "What were they like?", hopefully this record will help them decide. This is a record of us, we started our journey in service to the nation and finished our journey in service to each other and community.
